Aims of this course

During this course you will learn to
- Understand the anatomy and physiology of the upper respiratory tract relevant to tracheostomies
- Understand what a tracheostomy is, and where it is placed
- Understand why someone may need a tracheostomy
- Know the difference between different tracheostomies
- Understand how to provide tracheostomy care including emergency care, equipment used and documentation
- Identify Infections and over granulation
- Understand communication issues
- Understand feeding difficulties and tracheostomies
- Understands the important of written documentation at each stage of tracheostomy care delivery.
Purpose


Our Tracheostomy Care course is designed to provide comprehensive training for healthcare professionals, caregivers, and educators on the proper care and management of individuals with tracheostomies. This course aims to enhance your understanding of tracheostomy care, ensuring you can confidently support those living with a tracheostomy.
Course Overview
This course, delivered by a registered nurse clinical skills educator, offers an in-depth exploration of tracheostomy care, covering essential topics such as:
- Reasons for Tracheostomies: Understanding the medical conditions and scenarios where a tracheostomy may be necessary.
- Anatomy and Types of Tracheostomies: A detailed look at the human anatomy involved and the various types of tracheostomies performed.
- Impact on Individuals’ Lives: Insight into how living with a tracheostomy affects a person’s daily life and well-being.
Theory Session
The course begins with a one-day intensive theory session. This session delves into critical aspects of tracheostomy care, including:
- Professional Accountability and Responsibility: Understanding your role and obligations in tracheostomy care.
- Infection Control and Management: Learning how to prevent, identify, and manage infections.
- Emergency Response and Complication Management: How to handle emergencies and complications related to tracheostomies.
- Documentation: The importance of accurate documentation in providing high-quality care.
Completion of this theory course will give you a Certification of Completion. Please note this will not allow you to practice until you have completed the practical sessions and passed 3 competency assessments with the RN clinical skills educator.
Practical Competency
To pass the whole course, you will need to complete three practical competency assessments with the RN Clinical Skills Educator, at least 1 will be with a client.
After completing the theory session, participants must attend two further hands-on practical sessions with our RN clinical skills educator to develop and demonstrate your competency in tracheostomy care. These sessions are designed to build confidence and ensure you can apply your knowledge effectively in real-world scenarios.
Ongoing observation and assessment by our registered nurse clinical skills educator will be required to maintain compliance and quality standards.
External Quality Assurance
Successful completion of this course will not only enhance your skills but also provide your organisation with additional assurance through an externally conducted quality assessment. This supports your CQC PIR (Provider Information Return) compliance, ensuring that your care standards meet regulatory requirements.
Entry Requirements
To enroll in the Tracheostomy Care course at Lagan’s Healthcare, the following entry requirements must be met:
Practical Access: Learners will need access to a client with a tracheostomy to ensure ongoing practice and the application of skills learned during the course. This is essential for developing and maintaining competency in tracheostomy care.
Education and Experience: Participants should have completed a Level 2 Health and Social Care qualification and have a minimum of 6 months of experience working in a care environment. However, we assess each application on an individual basis, and exceptions can be made if required.
Age Requirement: This qualification is suitable for learners who are 18 years of age or older.
Progression
Successful learners can progress to other qualifications such as:
- Level 3 Diploma in Healthcare Support (RQF).
- Level 3 Diploma in Adult Care (RQF)
